Oaxaca: An intimate journey into art, food & culture
May 5 - 12, 2027

An Art, Food & Cultural Journey

Discover Oaxaca's Living Traditions

5-12 May, 2027
with Matteo Bernasconi

Join Matteo & Anna from Peach Black Gallery for an intimate eight day journey into Oaxaca, where ancient traditions, remarkable craftsmanship, extraordinary food and contemporary creativity are woven into everyday life.

For artists and makers, there is something deeply inspiring about seeing how knowledge is carried through generations. How hands learn materials, how techniques evolve, and how old traditions continue to find new forms. Throughout the retreat, we’ll explore these ideas together and discover how they might inform, challenge or inspire our own creative practice.

We’ll experience Oaxaca through its food, history, artists and makers, moving from the kitchen to the print studio, from ancient Zapotec sites to contemporary galleries, and into the workshops of ceramicists, weavers and craftspeople. Along the way, we’ll cook, draw, print, make paper, work with clay and natural dyes, explore markets and museums, and share meals and mezcal together.

This is an invitation to slow down, look closely and immerse yourself in a place where making, cooking and creativity are part of everyday life. To step outside your usual surroundings, encounter different ways of working, and return to your own practice with fresh ideas and inspiration.

What will you experience?

Oaxaca is the cultural heart of southern Mexico, where ancient Indigenous traditions, art, food and creativity are woven into everyday life.

Known as the “Land of the People of the Clouds” by the Zapotec people, Oaxaca is a place where the past and present exist side by side. Over eight days, we’ll explore its history, food, artists, artisans and living traditions.

At Peach Black Gallery, we believe creativity grows through connection to people, places, materials and old traditions. Led by artist Matteo Bernasconi, together with a local guide, we’ll look closely, learn from the people we meet and discover how Oaxaca’s creative traditions might inspire and deepen our own practice.

MONTE ALBÁN

Ancient Zapotec civilisation

Explore the spectacular ancient city of Monte Albán with our local guide, discovering its temples, plazas and tombs and the remarkable Zapotec civilisation that shaped the region.

COOK OAXACAN FOOD

Mole, tortillas, chocolate & local cooking

Spend a full day cooking with local cooks, learning the traditions behind Oaxaca’s extraordinary cuisine before sitting down together to share what we’ve made.

MEET ARTISTS

Behind the scenes of Oaxaca’s creative community

Visit contemporary artists in their studios, hear about their practice and discover the ideas, materials and influences behind their work.

Alongside our studio visits, we’ll spend time at leading cultural institutions including the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, the Museo Textil de Oaxaca and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, discovering the artists, materials and ideas that have shaped Oaxaca’s creative landscape.

MAKE WITH YOUR HANDS

Ceramics · textiles · handmade paper · printmaking

Work alongside artists and makers across four hands-on workshops, learning traditional techniques and exploring the materials and processes that have been passed down through generations.

EXPLORE THE CITY & MARKETS

Taste, wander & see Oaxaca through local eyes

Explore Oaxaca’s streets and markets with our local guide, discovering local food, galleries, shops and the everyday life of the city, with time to wander, sketch or simply take it all in at your own pace.

Where will you stay?

A beautiful home in the heart of Oaxaca, reserved exclusively for our group.

For the week, the entire property is ours to share — a beautifully designed Mexican boutique residence in the heart of Oaxaca, arranged around a traditional central courtyard and garden.

You can choose to share a spacious bedroom with another guest, or enjoy your own private room for an additional $600. All rooms have their own private bathroom, with air conditioning and Wi-Fi throughout the residence.

The shared apartments also have kitchenettes and comfortable living and dining spaces, giving us somewhere to gather, have breakfast, relax after a day exploring, or enjoy a drink together in the evening.

It’s a setting that gives you the best of both worlds: the privacy and comfort of your own space, with the warmth and connection of sharing a beautiful home with a small group.

Just a short walk from Oaxaca’s historic Zócalo, the residence puts the city’s plazas, markets, cafés, galleries and cultural life right on our doorstep.

Register your interest and we’ll send you the full itinerary and answer any questions about the journey.

About Us

Peach Black Tours grew from Peach Black Gallery, the creative space in Sydney founded by Matteo Bernasconi and Anna Griffiths in 2018. The gallery has hosted exhibitions, music, dance, workshops and other creative events, bringing artists and audiences together.

Matteo is a visual artist and experienced art educator, while Anna has worked for many years producing exhibitions, events and concerts and managing artists. Together, they curate small group journeys that combine art, culture, food and time spent with local people.

Our tours are designed to go beyond the usual sights, with opportunities to meet artists and artisans, take part in workshops, explore local culture, and experience each destination through the people who live there.

The secret of happiness
is simple – good art, good
food and good company!
